Megan Williams Was Captive for A MONTH

September 27, 2007

From The Wilmington Journal:

Startling new twists and turns in the Megan Williams case, the 20
year-old black West Virginia woman who was allegedly kidnapped, raped
and tortured by six white career criminals, three of whom are women.

six suspects have now been charged with kidnapping, the most serious
charge that can carry up to life in prison upon conviction.

have all also been charged with at least one count each of first-degree
sexual offense, which if convicted, could carry a sentence of up to 35
years behind bars.

Meanwhile, Logan County Sheriff’s
investigators have now revised their original theory that Ms. Williams
was held captive for a week.

In court testimony Tuesday,
authorities said they’ve determined that Williams had been kidnapped
and held against her will at the Big Creek mobile home residence since
August 2 – well over a month.

That is the same day that Bobby
Ray Brewster, the 24 year-old son of Frankie Brewster, was released
from jail after serving time for assaulting and threatening Williams in

Over a month.  That’s how long the Megan Williams was subjected to the horrors administered by those six criminal monsters in West Virginia. Over a month of being raped, brutalized and forced to eat the most deplorable things.

There are more than a few things to be livid and down right mad as hell about this case, but I want to highlight just two.  First, I applaud The Wilmington Journal.  I applaud it, because their still on the case.  I checked my local paper, The Washington Post, a nationally read daily, but there was no update.  It underscores my original thoughts about why this case has yet to be designated as a hate crime.  That being the institutionalized racism involved in the layers of this country’s inner workings.  Let me re-iterate, Megan Williams was lost, before we knew she was kidnapped, for a MONTH!  CNN, FOX and MSNBC has been on a near candlelight vigil in search of Steve Fossett.  If that’s not a double standard on what is news worthy, I don’t know what is. Secondly, we still have no hate crimes added to the assailants charges. Listen to the explanation by the Logan County Prosecutor, Brian Abraham:

“I explained to them the focus will remain on securing evidence
regarding the most serious allegations,” Abraham told The Charleston
Gazette. “Once the investigation is complete, we will make the
determination on whether other charges, such as hate-crime charges,
might be warranted.”

I’m no lawyer, but if Michael Vick (who I think is an imbecile) can have charges added on to his case, what is stopping this prosecutor from adding hate-crime designations to this one.  Could it be regional distaste for what that would mean to the broader country, as it pertains to our view of the state of West Virginia, or Logan County.  Could be.  Brian Abraham may be sincere in his approach, but he is a reflection of the institutional nature of racism and classism in America.  It is fact, that the black community suffers at deplorable levels via an unbalanced justice system.  That is not only exhibited in our levels of incarceration, it is also exhibited when our cases are not processed as stringently as those cases having black defendants.

We need changes.  It is impossible for one not to see the racial tone of this crime.  Let’s hope and pray that Mr. Abraham doesn’t turn a blind eye to the obvious.

This is worst than Jena, thisd happened to a defenseless black girl, while six rednecks raped her for a month! This could have been my daughter, my cousin, my neice, my fiends daughter, I’m pissed. Enough is enough! Keep on doing what you do. I respect your work. A change is going to come.

    Thanks AAPP.

Your right this is a horrible, I repeat horrible crime. There has to be a disregard for humanity in general for people to so this. I’m angry, but moreso, I want justice. I want the perpetrators of this racist action to be shown for what they are, and then lost in the deepest dungeons of the worst prison forever.
