Hurrican Gustav – The “Service Event”?

August 31, 2008

CNN’s Dana Bash reports:

"He wants to do something service-oriented if and when the storm hits and it’s as bad as its expected to be now," the McCain source said.

They are also hoping to get McCain himself to a storm-affected area as soon as possible."

So, in the midst of New Orleans being evacuated and news reports all over calling for what may be the storm of all storms. John McCain has the presence of mind to turn his acceptance speech into the greatest service event ever held. Excuse me if I am unimpressed. The notion that John McCain would seek to actually capitalize on the further tragedy of the citizens of the Gulf smacks of callousness and shameful self aggrandizement.

It also gives me the implication, contrary to the media’s reporting, that postponing the Republican National Convention is the furthest thing from McCain’s mind. Rather there will be a quick re-focusing toward the devastation, should there be any, that Gustav provides. Why would he do this? So that he can re-shape his image with that region, and make us forget what he was doing three years ago while Katrina ravaged New Orleans lower 9th.

Celebrating W’s birthday!
