Dangerous Denial

January 12, 2011

Unbelievable. Sarah Palin has now denied any culpability (along with most of the Right’s political talking head and pundit class) for the politically charged climate that put the deranged Tuscon, AZ gunmen in the frame of mind to murder. When will the people who have the ears of the masses take responsibility for what they say?! But more than denying any responsibility, Palin accuses thoughtful critics of “Blood Libel”; a term that singularly depicts the anti-Semitic accusation of Christian’s (in the middle ages mind you) that Jewish people were the murderers of Jesus Christ. Again Ms. Palin shows herself unworthy of leadership.

But not surprising. She has often tried to minimize the weight of her rhetoric, or to lay claims that she is treated unfairly by the media and those idealistically opposite from herself. But let’s make no mistake here…all the violently charged political posturing and rhetoric perpetrated mainly by the Right, but not exclusively by them, has consequences.

Palin’s claim that:

“Acts of monstrous criminality stand on their own,” she said. “They begin and end with the criminals who commit them.” – Politico

is a false. Monstrous criminality, monstrous violence are derived by stimulus.  At the onset of the first Christian Crusades, during the Council of Clermont in 1095, Pope Urban II gave an empassioned speech to his French countrymen. The text of the speech diverges in the 5 versions of it’s publication, but generally agree that Urban talked about the violence of European society and the necessity of maintaining the Peace of God; about helping the Greeks, who had asked for assistance; about the (alleged) crimes being committed against Christians in the east (after the advent of the; and about a new kind of war, an armed pilgrimage, and of rewards in heaven, where remission of sins were offered to any who might partake in the undertaking. The passion of Pope Urban II’s speech was said to evoke in the listeners what would be the battle cry for many crusaders “God Wills It!”

Urban would then go on a tour of France, preaching to the masses and recruiting those who would “take the cross”. At the end of these messages the enthusiastic volunteers would take vows to complete a pilgrimage to the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. The death toll of the Crusades is estimated in the millions.

Words have consequence. It strains credulaty for anyone, let alone someone with the cult-like following that Palin has to, to deny this. From time immemorial it has been true that the ultra charismatic, the powerful, the people with the ear of many have been able to influence many of their followers to act on their worst urges.

No act of monstrous proportion ever stands on its own Ms. Palin.

I think you should learn this before you put your hand in for a certain office in 2012, because without accountability leaders are a danger to the people they influence and the those in their wake.
